For me, college football went the way of the NFL and prospered
Growing up in the 80s, there wasn't hardly much college football on, and I was a big NFL fan. It was Sunday 1PM and 4PM games. You had Monday Night where the game was usually a big game. It made Mondays feel special...it also made the Thanksgiving Day games special because it was rare to have a non-Sun/Mon game.
I would be excited for a game-break where you could see highlights of the other games and get scores as you watch the Sunday games. No Directv, no phones to check the other scores...you only had what CBS/NBC was broadcasting.
College football started to dilute the airwaves on Saturday in a good way. It became exciting to see teams from across the country play - you could flip around and most all of the games had meaning as you moved throughout the season. Heck, the 10:30 Pac-# game was fun to watch with the non-D games. When ESPN introduced Thursday night, that sort of was college football's MNF game.
I think the main issue for me that could affect viewership is that if I sit down and watch college football on Saturday, I get burned out by night's end. That means when Sunday rolls around, I may watch the 1st half on the 1 o'clock game and that is it. I don't really watch the Tues and Wed and Fri versions of college football. I don't really watch the Thursday night NFL or Monday Night games. I don't really care about the MAC and I don't really care to watch average to below-average match-ups of the NFL.
Thus, I am a cram-it-all-in guy that enjoys having 50 college football games to watch over a 12-hour period. That use to be my feeling when there wasn't much college football to watch as a kid and you got a plethora of NFL games at 1PM with that excitement. That is why I don't watch a lot of Bowl games because they play them one at a time. That is why I love the first weekend of the NCAA b-ball tourney because there is so much going on at once. Unless I still have a team in it after the first weekend, I sort of lose interest in the tourney.
That may be why I've lost interest in the NFL as well - I don't really have a team. I liked the Cowboys as a kid - when Jerry Jones bought them, I didn't like them and I went with wherever Herschel Walker went (becoming a free-agent [player] fan). Once Vick showed up, I followed him. Now, I don't really have a team to follow. I use to gamble/play fantasy football, but I don't do that now - but that almost put an empty feeling to the games instead of being passionate as a fan. That is why having a team you can get behind (Virginia Tech) does add to the excitement - especially when they can win and stay important - ramble over.
